Tariq Al Habtoor is a dedicated professional, studied intellectual and longtime member of the Al Habtoor Group—a conglomerate with myriad business interests across the UAE and the Middle East.
But one of Al Habtoor’s greatest passions is and has always been the sport of polo, a challenging and thrilling contest that requires years of practice and skill to be successful.
The Basics of Polo
Tariq Al Habtoor continues to play polo and compete in sanctioned matches on a regular basis—and has an extensive tournament resume that includes competitions across the UAE and beyond. But as he knows, many are unfamiliar even with the basics of the sport, including:
· Field parameters. A field, or “pitch,” is allowed to be no longer than 300 yards long and 160 yards wide. Each goal post is no more than eight yards apart.
· Play duration. Every polo match is divided into ‘chukkas,’ which are no more than seven minutes long. The interval between each chukka is three minutes, while halftime is extended to five.
